Santa Margherita Ligure, the largest town near Portofino, is well connected by air, train, and car, making it surprisingly easy to reach this corner of the Italian Riviera. Use the guide below to find the travel option that works best for you.

We highly recommend not renting a car for this portion of your trip due to the tight roads and limited parking.

The easiest routes from the U.S. and Europe

From the U.S.

If you’re traveling from the U.S., the simplest way to reach Santa Margherita and Portofino is to fly directly into Milan.

Milan has the most nonstop flight options from major U.S. cities, and once you land, it’s an easy trip down to the Riviera by train or private car.

Most guests land at Milan Malpensa, but Linate also works if you’re connecting through Europe.

From Europe and the U.K.

If you’re already in Europe, the easiest airport to fly into is Genoa.

It’s a small, calm airport and only about 45 minutes from Santa Margherita.

You can connect into Genoa from cities like Paris, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, and Munich, and the short drive makes the arrival very smooth.

TAXI, TRAIN OR CAR RENTAL

Upon arriving at your airport of choice, there will be a scenic journey along the Ligurian coast to your destination, either in Portofino or Santa Margherita, depending on where your hotel is located. Below, you'll find links to book your travel by train, car rental, or car hire.

For car rentals, you will need an International Driving Permit, and parking is limited in the area.
